What is Fire Resistant Cable? What is PH120 & What is PH30?

When carrying out a fire alarm installation, all materials must be fire resistant and compliant. This includes everything, as well as the cabling that is used. The British Standards recommend the type of cabling used based on fire resistance testing. The most popular cables used in fire alarm installation are PH30 and PH120.

These cables are enhanced fire resistant, which means they have been explicitly developed for specific scenarios. Some buildings would require a more extended fire alarm system activation, and these cables are ideal for those fire alarm installations. For example, more significant buildings may involve a multi-phase evaluation process, so the fire alarm must operate much longer.
The cables are tested by being placed in a direct flame and timed until the circuit breaks. From this experiment, they can work out the length of time that cable can survive in immediate heat situations, typically around 830°C. The failure point is when the cable does not maintain the voltage or break. The cables are then assigned a figure based on the number of minutes they survived, with 120 being the most.

PH120 is the cable suitable for indoor fire alarm installations where the circuit must be maintained for up to 120 minutes—made with high-performance silicone rubber and superior low smoke zero halogen materials.
PH30 is the cable suitable for indoor fire alarm installations where the circuit must be maintained for up to 30 minutes—made with high-performance silicone rubber and superior low smoke zero halogen materials.
PH30 is a standard version suitable for indoor fire alarm installations where the circuit must be maintained for up to 30 minutes,
while PH120 is an enhanced version suitable for indoor fire alarm installations where the course must be held for up to 120 minutes.
Both PH30 and PH120 are made with plain annealed flexible copper as conductor, high-performance silicone rubber as insulation, and superior low smoke, zero halogen materials as an outer jacket.
The only difference is that PH30 is shielded with PET Foil and Aluminum Foil, but PH120 is shielded with Fibre Glass Tape and Aluminum Foil which performs much better while burning the fire.
